The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has prepared a series of Flood Insurance Study reports which resulted in preliminary digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM).  These preliminary maps reflect updated Base Flood Elevations which may impact our Town and its residents in a number of ways.  The proposed BFE’s, if finalized, will become the basis for the floodplain management measures in our town including continued qualification for participation in the National Flood Insurance Program.

What the Town Needs to Do

FEMA has requested that the Town and its residents review the maps with regards to the Base Flood Elevations.  The Town has 90 days to appeal any information related to the BFE’s.  The process for appeal is detailed in a letter from FEMA.

Project Background

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation has partnered with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to assist with the management and coordination of Flood Map Modernization in Massachusetts. The focus of the Map Modernization initiative is to update the effective FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps, commonly known as FIRM. FIRMs are created to support the National Flood Insurance Program, or NFIP. The NFIP is a federal program, administered by FEMA, which makes flood insurance available in communities that agree to adopt corrective and preventative floodplain management regulations that will reduce future flood damages.

Step 2: Understand what the new flood areas mean for your insurance coverage and if the Grandfathering Rule applies to you.
